Torasemide is a prescription loop diuretic used to remove excess salt and water from the body. It belongs to the sulfonamide group and is commonly chosen for edema linked to heart failure, cirrhosis, or kidney disease. Compared with some older diuretics, torasemide often has a longer duration of action and a more predictable response, helping doctors tailor treatment. It may also help lower high blood pressure caused by fluid overload. Like all medicines, it must be used under medical supervision with regular monitoring.
It works by blocking the Na+-K+-2Cl- transporter in the loop of Henle in the kidneys. This reduces the kidneys’ ability to reclaim salt and water, causing more urine output. The diuretic effect helps reduce swelling and can ease shortness of breath in heart failure. In most patients the effect starts within a few hours and can last through the day, depending on dose and kidney function. In kidney disease or dehydration, the response may be less predictable, so a clinician may adjust treatment.
The dose is individualized. A common starting dose for adults is 5–10 mg once daily, sometimes 20 mg if edema is significant. Doses can be increased in small steps up to 40 mg daily based on response and tolerance. In some cases, split dosing during the day is used. Children and older adults, as well as people with liver or kidney problems, require careful adjustment with regular checking of electrolytes and kidney function. Always follow the label or a clinician’s instruction and report ongoing symptoms.
The most frequent issues are increased urination, thirst, and dizziness, especially on standing. Changes in electrolyte balance are common: lower potassium and sodium, and sometimes low magnesium. Dehydration can occur, particularly in the elderly or those with low fluid intake. Headache, muscle cramps, and fatigue are possible. Rare but serious risks include severe electrolyte disturbances, kidney function changes, hearing problems with high doses, and allergic reactions. Ototoxicity is uncommon but possible, especially with other ear-affecting medicines. Seek medical advice if swelling worsens or signs of dehydration appear.
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, including non-prescription drugs. NSAIDs can reduce torasemide’s effect and raise kidney risk. Potassium‑boosting medicines or potassium-sparing diuretics require monitoring. Lithium, some diabetes medicines, and certain blood pressure drugs may need dose adjustments. Do not use in severe dehydration, kidney failure with no urine output, or allergy to torasemide or sulfonamides. Pregnant or breastfeeding people should use only if clearly needed and after medical advice. The elderly should be watched for dehydration and electrolyte changes.
Torasemide tablets are commonly available in 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg strengths. Follow the pharmacist’s directions and the product label. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat, and keep out of reach of children. Check the expiry date before use and do not take tablets that are damaged. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless told otherwise by a clinician. For questions about dosage or interactions, contact the online pharmacy’s customer support.
